#10years10questions! My 10 answers for the 10th WoW Anniversary

Something a little different this time!
Yesterday I saw a Tweet from @AlternativeChat announcing their #10Years10Questions project, which instantly interested me and made me want to post my own answers!
You can find the entire post on the Alternative Chat’s Blog, so please, please check it out and submit your own answers! The questions were so fun to answer, and they really made me look at old screenshots, my WoW history, and reflect on all the years I’ve been playing.

So let’s just start answering questions!

1. Why did you start playing Warcraft?

– My brother and my cousin had a WoW account (yes they shared but they were also like 12 years old) and I would ALWAYS watch them play. I would keep asking noob questions like “omg why are you deleting that rock IT COULD BE IMPORTANT!!1!” etc. and they would always tease me. Then one day, I was at my cousins and he had to go take a shower, so he asked me if I can level his herbalism for him. I was like “HECK YES!” (not realizing it was slave work) so he told me to look for yellow dots on the minimap, and if I get attacked click 1, 2 then 3 then 1 again etc. I was overjoyed and had a blast. When I got home I begged my brother to install WoW on my PC too, and that’s how I started playing.

This was in TBC but, I didn’t have my own account because it was my brother’s. Pretty soon WotLK was announced, and seeing as I had some spare money I decided to buy my own account. So I did! I bought all 3 games, re-rolled my priest and the rest is history.

2. What was the first ever character you rolled?

– My Draenei priest of course! On my brother’s account I had a shadow priest named Samara, but when I got my own account the name was unavailable so I coined Samaramon, from Samara (The Ring) and -mon from Digimon.

My priest in 2008! One of the first screenshots I have of her :)

My priest currently! How things change.

She is STILL and always will be my main. The loading screens look so different but I assure you, other than the hairstyle (and realm change), she’s the exact same.

3. Which factors determined your faction choice in game?

– Before I made my char, I asked my brother to tell me a bit about each faction. I also read the introduction on the website, and the back of the WoW game. The Horde really struck me as the bad guys, just really left a bad impression on me.

Plus, I was really, really attracted to the Draenei race, reading their story really made me feel for them and I really liked them visually, so I picked a Draenei. I chose Priest because my brother explained what healing is, and I wanted to heal (even though I went full shadow >_<)

 4. What has been your most memorable moment in Warcraft and why?

– When I got my Time Lost Proto Drake! Aaaaaaaaah what a day! I had been camping him on and off for about 3 years. I found out about him at the start of WotLK and only managed to get him mid-Cataclysm. So one day I decided to start hardcore camping, as in, not even leaving the zone until I either see him or Vyragosa. And that kept happening over and over, for several months, just seeing either the dragon or TLPD’s corpse. Until one day, I saw him alive!

BUT HE TURNED GRAY! Some DK started attacking him. My heart just sunk, but then, WHAT’S THIS? HE’S TURNING RED? FLYING UP? The DK actually fell to his death, and reset TLPD, while 3-4 other people were watching!

Now was my chance! I flew to TLPD just SPAMMING Levitate + Shadow Word: Pain. Just clicking those buttons insanely crazy, which cause my damn PC to freeze! So I sat in terror as I saw the screen just freeze, and stay like that. I got up from my chair, so incredibly nervous and just paced my room, until it unfroze.

IT REVEALED TLPD DEAD, AND ME SAFELY FLOATING TO THE BOTTOM.

You can see the DK wasn’t happy, but I was. It was such an adrenaline rush, and it’s not much, I know, but it’s my most memorable moment from WoW. At the time I was going through some hard times IRL and it was the highlight of not only my day, but my whole month.

One of my favorite mounts ever since!

5. What is your favourite aspect of the game and has this always been the case?

– The Lore, of course! If WoW wasn’t so rich in lore, I doubt I would have lasted this long. It has such amazing stories, characters, amazing zones, scenery, just the entire game is exactly what I want in a game.

Another aspect I recently started enjoying is Role-playing. I just love it, love my guild and it’s just so much fun. It’s an amazing opportunity to escape your everyday life, and just be who you want to be.

6. Do you have an area in game that you always return to?

– One of my favorite zones is Duskwood. I always try to visit it while leveling a new character, or just cause. It has an amazing atmosphere, amazing stories, and my all-time favorite zone music.

Another place I absolutely love and almost always stay in is Stormwind. Especially since they expanded it in Cataclysm, there’s just some amazing places behind the Cathedral, like the Stormwind lake. Very peaceful.

And of course, the reason why I make Draenei after Draenei, Azuremyst Isle. When I try to roll some new char, and I’m like, picking a race, Azuremyst always comes to mind and I’m like “SCREW IT, ANOTHER DRAENEI!”. Just look at it! Amazing. This also includes the Exodar.

I also enjoy Shattrath, Crystalsong, the entire Teldrassil, and one of my favorite leveling zones, the Hinterlands.

7. How long have you /played and has that been continuous?

– I have been playing pretty much non-stop since 2008 (the WotLK launch). There were a couple of months some years ago when I couldn’t afford the sub, but even then I made some trial accounts and played. There was a time when I would play non-stop, I admit, but I had no friends at the time and it was my only entertainment. Nowadays I play whenever I feel like it, sometimes for less than an hour a day.

My main char’s total /played is 285 days 20 hours, while I’ve been 90 for 66 days 22 hours. My next alt’s played is 80 days, etc. So all together with all my alts, I’d say my total /played is more than a year and a half.

8. Admit it: do you read quest text or not?

– I do if it’s the first time I’m doing them! Whenever there’s an expansion or just some new zone, I always read the quests, just cause I enjoy the stories but also cause I want to know why I’m doing what I’m doing. I really love some of the older chains, like the Morgan Ladimore story, and the Legend of Stalvan, but I also enjoy some of the newer quests like the Rambo parody and the Don Quixote quests.

I encourage everyone to read the quests, you miss up on some amazing stories and sometimes, just genuinely funny stuff!

9. Are there any regrets from your time in game?

– Just how foolishly I’ve spent huge amounts of gold. I get this greed sometimes for either mounts or ridiculously expensive transmog pieces, and spend tens of thousands of gold, only to regret it the next few days when there’s something that I DO need, but can’t afford.

 10. What effect has Warcraft had on your life outside gaming?

– Mostly positive. I met some amazing people through WoW, it has provided me with endless hours of fun, but mostly I’m grateful to WoW for being there for me when there was no one else.

It helped me when I first started playing, I had recently moved to a new place with my family and basically lost all my old friends, and didn’t know anyone in the new place, so WoW helped me pull through by making me laugh, making me talk to other people, making me experience a whole new world while mine wasn’t as good.

Later in my university years, I got somewhat depressed because my life wasn’t doing so well, in both personal and educational aspects. Some personal problems caused me to skip a year from Uni, and once again it was a time where I had no friends or anyone to rely on. I was in a long-distance relationship that was very hard, so once again, WoW was my friend. It helped me through the depression, it was also the time when I got introduced to RP and made some new friends from it, but it also helped me not to be shy and to try and interact with people more. Slowly my life started to pick up from there, and I’m currently very happy, in a wonderful relationship, and just finished my University :)

WoW also helped me to start drawing! I could never really find a use for my art, but thanks to WoW fan art and commissions, I actually started drawing often and enjoying every minute of it. It also helped me open my blog, and meet many other bloggers who share my interests as well!

WoW is always there when you want to escape the real life, it helps you be who you want to be, helps you be more confident, helps you meet other people, and just provides you with endless hours of fun.

I’m very thankful that I’ve been even a small part of the Warcraft Universe for almost 6 years now, and until the last server shuts down, I WILL BE PLAYING!

Thank you WoW, and thank you Blizzard.

But also, thank you guys who read my blog, who like and commission my art, and who support me, you’ve shown me an entire new aspect to the game where I can also open up creative side and use my art skills!

:)
